Preserving HiFi's History & Culture

California, which is arguably the most significant state in the nation for reflecting Filipino American history, has a very small number of landmarks that reflect this important part of our state's history. Few communities have been able to conduct historic resource surveys specific to a particular ethnic community. The surveys being conducted by SurveyLA and My HiFi's SurveyHiFi in Historic Filipinotown have begun to address this lack, but there is still much more to uncover. SurveyLA – the Los Angeles Historic Resources Survey – is Los Angeles' first-ever comprehensive program to identify significant historic resources throughout our city. SurveyLA is a process of locating and documenting the many historic resources that tell the story of the development of Los Angeles. SurveyHiFi, as led by My HiFi, focuses specifically in Historic Filipinotown.
As a part of SurveyHiFi, My HiFi has developed a community guide to help interested individuals and community groups participate in identifying, documenting, and preserving historic and cultural landmarks. Through our work, we have found that a grassroots effort is the most effective way to advocate and foster stewardship of historic resources, and to develop partnerships for local preservation efforts.
The My HiFi Historic Preservation Guide is designed to introduce you to resources, techniques and ideas that can help you research places in your own community associated with Filipino American heritage. It includes an introduction to conducting research on a neighborhood or individual building, an oral history "how-to," and basic information about historic preservation. We hope that community participation in historic and cultural preservation can create new information about historic and cultural resources, explore strategies for bringing greater recognition and interpretation to important historic and cultural sites, and discuss barriers to identifying, designating and protecting places that are important to Filipino American heritage.
